Black Ruby Barb - Pethia nigrofasciata 2-3cm

from £4.25

The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a vibrant and active fish native to the rivers and streams of Sri Lanka. Known for its striking black and red coloration, this barb is a popular choice for community tanks. Black Ruby Barbs are generally peaceful and do best in groups of six or more, as they are schooling fish and feel more secure in numbers. They thrive in a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming areas and gentle water flow, which mimics their natural habitat. A dark substrate can enhance their colors, making them even more visually appealing. These barbs are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods, including high-quality flake food, small live foods, and frozen foods. Their active nature and vibrant appearance make them a delightful addition to a community tank, provided the tank mates are also peaceful and the environment is well-maintained. Black Ruby Barbs are relatively easy to care for and can be a great choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists. They are also known for their hardiness and adaptability, making them a reliable and enjoyable fish to keep in a home aquarium.

Adult Size: Typically grows to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.

Temperature Range: 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C)

pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5

Compatibility: Generally peaceful and active, making them suitable for community tanks. They do best in groups of six or more, as they are schooling fish and feel more secure in numbers.

Originates from: South Asia, specifically the rivers and streams of Sri Lanka.

Ideal Substrate: Fine sand or small, smooth gravel. A dark substrate can help bring out their vibrant colors and create a more natural environment.

Ideal Tank Mates Suggestions:

  • Tetras: Species like Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, and Black Skirt Tetras.

  • Danios: Species like Zebra Danios and Pearl Danios.

  • Rasboras: Species like Harlequin Rasboras and Scissortail Rasboras.

  • Guppies: They can coexist with guppies, but ensure the tank is well-planted to provide hiding spots.

  • Corydoras Catfish: Species like Peppered Corydoras and Bronze Corydoras.

  • Dwarf Shrimp: Species like Cherry Shrimp and Amano Shrimp, which can help keep the tank clean.

  • Other Small Barbs: Species like Cherry Barbs and Tiger Barbs (though be cautious with Tiger Barbs as they can be nippy).

Fish to Avoid:

  • Large, Aggressive Fish: Species like Oscars, Jack Dempseys, and large cichlids can bully or harm the smaller, peaceful Black Ruby Barbs.

  • Fast, Nippy Fish: Species like Serpae Tetras and some types of Barbs (e.g., Tiger Barbs) can stress or injure the more docile Black Ruby Barbs.

  • Territorial Bottom-Dwellers: Species like larger Plecostomus or aggressive catfish can outcompete Black Ruby Barbs for food and space.
