Harlequin Glowlight Rasbora - Trigonostigma hengeli 1-2cm

from £2.65

The Trigonostigma hengeli, commonly known as the Glowlight Rasbora or Hengel's Rasbora, is a stunning and diminutive freshwater fish native to the peat swamp forests and blackwater streams of Indonesia, particularly Sumatra and Borneo.

Often confused with its larger cousin the Harlequin Rasbora (T. heteromorpha) and the similar Lambchop Rasbora (T. espei), the Glowlight Rasbora is distinguished by its smaller size (reaching just 3 centimetres) and its unique colouration. It features a translucent, silvery-peach body adorned with a thin, hockey-stick-shaped black marking along the rear flank, which is strikingly highlighted by a brilliant, neon-orange stripe above it that glows intensely under aquarium lighting.

This vibrant, glowing effect makes them a spectacular choice for planted aquariums, where they create a dazzling display against dark substrates and green foliage.

Despite their small stature, Glowlight Rasboras are confident and active schooling fish that must be kept in groups of at least 8-10 individuals to feel secure and display their best natural behaviour. In proper schools, they occupy the middle to upper water levels, moving together in a tight formation that showcases their shimmering colours.

These peaceful fish are excellent community inhabitants for other small, gentle species such as microrasboras, pygmy Corydoras, and freshwater shrimp, as they pose no threat to even the smallest tank mates.

Omnivorous by nature, they require tiny foods such as crushed high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen offerings like daphnia and baby brine shrimp to maintain their intense orange glow.

They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with dimmed lighting or floating plants to replicate their natural habitat. With proper care including regular water changes and stable parameters,

Glowlight Rasboras typically live 3-5 years, making them exquisite, glowing additions to peaceful nano and planted aquariums.

Trigonostigma hengeli

Scientific Name: Trigonostigma hengeli
Common Name: Glowligh / Lamb Chop Harlequin Rasbora
Family: Cyprinidae
Origin: Southeast Asia, specifically the peat swamp forests and blackwater streams of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
Size: Typically grows to about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length.
Lifespan: 5 to 8 years in captivity.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on small insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In aquariums, they can be fed a variety of commercial fish foods, including flakes and pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp.
Behavior: Harlequin rasboras are peaceful and active fish that do best in groups. They are known for their striking coloration and lively swimming patterns, which make them a popular choice for community tanks.
Water Parameters: Prefer a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C), and soft to moderately hard water.
Breeding: Breeding Harlequin rasboras can be challenging but is possible with the right conditions. They require a separate breeding tank with slightly acidic and soft water, and the tank should be dimly lit. The eggs are laid on fine-leaved plants and hatch in about 24 to 48 hours.
Tank Setup: A well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas is ideal. They prefer a tank with a dark substrate to enhance their colors and a gentle water flow to mimic their natural habitat.
Compatibility: Harlequin rasboras are compatible with other peaceful, small fish. They should not be kept with larger, aggressive species that might see them as food.
