Origin: West Africa, specifically found in the rivers and streams of Nigeria and Cameroon.
Size: Typically grows to about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) in length.
Lifespan: 5 to 8 years in captivity.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods including algae, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In aquariums, they can be fed a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Behavior: Kribensis are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other peaceful fish. They are known for their vibrant colors and active, curious behavior. They are also excellent parents and are known for their strong parental care.
Water Parameters: Prefer a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5, a temperature range of 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C), and soft to moderately hard water.
Breeding: Kribensis are substrate spawners. The female lays eggs in a carefully chosen spawning site, such as a cave or under a piece of driftwood. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, providing excellent parental care.
Tank Setup: A well-maintained aquarium with a sandy or fine gravel substrate, plenty of rocks, caves, and driftwood for hiding and spawning is ideal. They also benefit from some plant cover and open swimming areas.
Compatibility: Compatible with other peaceful fish and cichlids of similar size. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species that might stress or harm them.
