The Male Betta is a stunning and popular freshwater aquarium fish, known for its beautiful colors and flowing fins. With proper care, they can thrive and add a vibrant touch to any aquarium.

Scientific Name:

Betta splendens

Common Name:

Male Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish

Adult Size:

2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm)

Temperature Range:

75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C)

pH Range:

6.5 to 7.5

Compatibility:

Generally peaceful, but males are highly territorial and should not be kept with other male bettas. They can be kept with other peaceful fish that do not have long, flowing fins, as these can be mistaken for rivals. Good tank mates include tetras, guppies, rasboras, and small catfish.

Minimum Tank Size:

25 liters but a larger tank is better for a community setup

Originates from:

Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia

Ideal Substrate:

Fine sand or small, smooth gravel. A planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and gentle water flow is ideal.

Ideal Tank Mates Suggestions:

Peaceful fish such as small Tetras, , Rasboras, and small catfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.

Fish to Avoid:

Aggressive fish, large fish, and species that are known to nip at long fins, such as some barbsand some tetras like black widows etc, cichlids and male guppies.

Diet:

Omnivorous; they will eat a variety of foods including high-quality betta pellets, live food (such as bloodworms and brine shrimp), and frozen food. They also benefit from occasional vegetable matter like blanched peas.

Breeding:

Male bettas are the primary breeders. They build a bubble nest at the surface of the water and court the female. The male will wrap around the female to encourage her to release eggs, which he fertilizes and then collects and places in the bubble nest. The male will guard the nest and the fry until they are free-swimming.

Appearance:

Male bettas are known for their vibrant and diverse coloration and their long, flowing fins. They come in a wide range of colors, including red, blue, green, and multicolor. Their fins can be long and flowing, making them highly ornamental.

Behavior:

Males are generally more aggressive and territorial compared to females. They are known for their display behavior, especially when they see their reflection or another male. They are active and enjoy exploring their environment, especially if there are plants and decorations to hide in.

Care Tips:

  • Water Quality: Maintain clean water with regular water changes and a good filtration system.

  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hiding spots with plants, caves, and decorations to reduce stress and provide enrichment.

  • Feeding: Feed a varied diet to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.

  • Stress Reduction: Avoid over-crowding and provide a calm, stable environment to reduce stress and aggression.
