Japanese Medaka Rice Fish
The Platinum Medaka Rice Fish is a stunning variety of the Japanese rice fish (Oryzias latipes), cherished by aquarists for its shimmering, pearl-white colouration. These small freshwater fish typically reach just 3-4 centimetres in length, making them perfect for nano aquariums and planted tanks.
Their translucent, almost iridescent appearance creates an ethereal quality as they glide through the water, catching and reflecting light beautifully. Originally developed through selective breeding in Japan, the Platinum variety has become increasingly popular amongst hobbyists in the UK and worldwide, prized for both its delicate beauty and hardy nature.
Caring for Platinum Medaka is remarkably straightforward, which contributes to their appeal for both beginners and experienced fishkeepers. They thrive in temperatures between 18-28°C, making them suitable for unheated tanks in many British homes.
These peaceful shoaling fish prefer to be kept in groups of at least six, where they'll display their natural schooling behaviour and feel most secure. They're adaptable to various water conditions but appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle filtration.
Their diet is uncomplicated - they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp. Regular small feedings throughout the day help maintain their vibrant appearance and active nature.
Breeding Platinum Medaka is one of their most rewarding aspects, as they spawn regularly in well-maintained aquariums. Females carry their eggs attached to their bodies for several hours before depositing them amongst fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. The fry are relatively easy to raise on infusoria and later baby brine shrimp.
Their prolific breeding habits, combined with their peaceful temperament and modest space requirements, make them an excellent choice for aquascaping enthusiasts who want active, attractive fish that won't disturb delicate plants or smaller tank mates.
