Majestic Madusa Pleco L034

The Medusa Pleco, scientifically known as Ancistrus ranunculus and designated as L034, is a truly captivating addition to the freshwater aquarium.

Originating from the fast-flowing, rocky shallows of the Xingu River basin in Brazil, this remarkable catfish earns its mythological name from the extraordinary array of fleshy tentacles adorning the heads of mature males.

These elaborate bristles, resembling the snake-haired Gorgon of Greek legend, gives the fish an undeniably unique and somewhat prehistoric appearance.

Typically reaching around 10 to 13 centimetres in length, they sport a flattened, broad profile with a dark, slate-grey to black colouration. We find that their distinctive look and manageable size make them a highly sought-after species for enthusiasts looking to add a touch of the extraordinary to their aquatic displays.

When it comes to husbandry, replicating their natural environment is key to ensuring our Medusa Plecos thrive.

Because they come from clean, fast-moving water, we always suggest cleaning the aquarium well and moving the water well.

They prefer warmer temperatures, ideally between 25°C and 28°C, alongside pristine water conditions. A setup featuring smooth river stones, slate, and plenty of driftwood will not only mimic their native habitat but also provide the essential caves and crevices they need to feel secure.

While they are generally peaceful towards mid- and top-dwelling tank mates, they can be somewhat territorial with other bottom dwellers, so providing ample hiding spaces is crucial to maintaining a harmonious community.

Unlike many of its Ancistrus cousins, the Medusa Pleco is more likely to eat meat than it is to eat vegetables.

We make sure they get the nutrients they need by giving them a variety of food. This includes high-quality carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. We sometimes give them fresh vegetables like courgette or cucumber. Feeding them after the aquarium lights go out caters to their nocturnal behaviour. Breeding L034 in captivity is a rewarding challenge; it requires excellent water quality and the provision of snug breeding caves. The male takes on the dedicated role of guarding the eggs and fanning them with his pectoral fins until they hatch.

With the right care and attention to their specific needs, these fascinating catfish make a spectacular and enduring centrepiece for the dedicated aquarist.
