At Pet Aqua, we understand the heartache that comes with beginner's mistakes, which is why we've designed this innovative planning tool. A Word of Advice

Whilst this tool is clever and will massively help in most cases, we must add that there may be some fish that could be incompatible with each other in specific circumstances. We always recommend doing additional research for your particular setup. However, our planner will give you an excellent starting point and a solid understanding of what you can and can't stock in your aquarium.

How to Use Pet Aqua's Aquarium Planner: A Complete Walkthrough

Welcome to our step-by-step guide on using Pet Aqua's innovative fish stocking calculator. Follow this simple walkthrough to plan your perfect aquarium setup!

Step 1: Enter Your Aquarium Volume

Start by adding the water volume your aquarium holds. You have a choice of measurement units:

• Litres

• US Gallons

• UK Gallons

Once you've entered the volume, your chosen measurement will appear in a confirmation box below, making it easy to verify your aquarium size.

Step 2: Select Your Water Type and Temperature

Choose from three water and fish type options:

• Tropical – for warmwater species

• Coldwater – perfect for goldfish and other coldwater fish

• Temperate – for species that prefer moderate temperatures

You can then set your preferred temperature display in either:

• Fahrenheit

• Celsius

Step 3: Choose Your Measurement Units

Select your preferred measurement for fish sizes:

• Inches

• Centimetres

Step 4: Select Your Stocking Rules

Choose from three stocking rule options depending on your filtration system and experience level:

• Conservative (Safest) – recommended for beginners and standard filtration

• Moderate – for well-maintained systems with good filtration

• UK Traditional – for experienced fishkeepers with excellent filtration. This is out dated, we have added to compare set ups.

Top Tip: You can switch between stocking rules at any time. It's quite interesting to see how far apart each rule is and how important it is to give fish the space they deserve for healthy, happy living.

Step 5: Monitor Your Bio Load

Once you've chosen your credentials, you'll see information boxes displaying:

• Bio load levels

• Amount of fish stocked

• Remaining capacity

These update automatically as you add fish to your aquarium plan.

Step 6: Start Adding Fish

Now the fun begins! Browse our database of over 100 popular aquarium fish species commonly available at aquatics shops in Medway and throughout Kent.

As you add each fish, you'll receive:

• Group Requirements – advice on whether the fish needs to be kept in a school or group

• Compatibility Warnings – alerts if the fish may not be compatible with others you've added

• Size Recommendations – NEW FEATURE! Advice if your selected fish is too small or too large for your chosen aquarium

Watch the bio load and stocking bar increase as you add fish, helping you visualise your aquarium's capacity.

Step 7: Add Custom Fish (Optional)

Can't find a fish you want in our database? No problem! Use the Custom Tab to add your own:

1. Fill in the required information boxes

2. Tick the custom fish characteristics

3. Add to your personal database

Note: Custom fish entries only appear in your own planner and won't show up online, so you can name them anything you like!
